Healthy Nutrition and Diet

“Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.” Hippocrates 400 BC

Eating well is one of the most powerful ways we have to transform our health. We live in an age where nutritious whole foods face stiff competition from convenient processed snacks and off the shelf, fast-food and oven-ready meals. It’s more necessary than ever to know how to make smart dietary choices. The foodstuffs we regularly fuel our bodies with can either provide protection against disease or pave the path towards long term chronic health problems.

Research demonstrates that a diet of whole foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, dairy, and healthy fats significantly reduces risks for obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. Meanwhile, highly processed products laden with sugar, saturated fats, and sodium drive up inflammation, blood sugar, and cholesterol – all of which are precursors to chronic illness.

In the coming sections, we’ll explore the basics of a balanced diet looking at different elements such as carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals and address some of the many myths around them.  We’ll discuss the range of benefits to be found by eating antioxidant-rich fruits and veggies, whole grains, and good fats from nuts, seeds, and oily fish. You’ll learn how real, minimally processed foods contain a wide variety of vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds essential for healthy metabolism, immunity, and organ function. We’ll also discuss practical tips for making smarts swaps from overly processed snacks to healthy ones.

Highly processed food isn’t just bad for us because we eat it instead of healthy options; science is now finding that these items interfere adversely with our normal hunger/full signals causing us to feel hungry more often and eat more than we actually need – setting us up for overweight and obesity. Manufacturers apparently know this but their focus is profit and the more we buy, the more they profit.

We aim to show you how easy it is to make simple changes day by day and week by week to enhance your diet and health.  We’ll include evidence-based inspiration to upgrade your plate and  embrace more of what truly nourishes the body from farm to fork. Now let’s start unlocking the incredible power of food to fuel, heal, and delight!
